Why Framebolt asks for Screen Recording permission on macOS

macOS protects screen pixels behind a system permission. Framebolt needs that access to capture a selected region or main display; it does not use the permission as a reason to upload your captures.

What the permission enables

Framebolt uses macOS screen capture APIs to read pixels for a selected region or the main display. The first real capture may prompt for Screen Recording access. The app's capture controls, editor, preview, and recording HUD are excluded from its own captures.

Grant access safely

  1. 1

    Open Privacy & Security

Use the permission link shown by Framebolt or open System Settings → Privacy & Security → Screen Recording.

  2. 2

    Enable Framebolt

Turn on access for the app you launch. macOS may ask you to quit and reopen the app before the new permission is observed.

  3. 3

    Try a small capture

Return to Framebolt and capture a permitted region. Start with Notes as the paste destination so you can separate capture from destination-specific behavior.

When access still appears missing

  • Confirm the enabled entry matches the app bundle you actually launched, especially after a development rebuild.
  • Quit and reopen Framebolt after changing the toggle; do not assume a running process has reloaded the permission.
  • Test a normal, unprotected region. DRM-protected or permission-restricted windows can remain unavailable.
  • Do not casually reset the system permission database. Capture permissions are user state and should be changed through the Privacy & Security UI.
